Employment & Education
At Newcastle YMCA we understand the hardships faced by young people in finding work. There are many reasons for this, however, our goal is to support young people in whatever way we can. Our Employability and Education Programmes are aimed at helping young people find work, continue their education (Key Stage 4) and provide support by young people who have been excluded from schools.
Employability Programmes with Accredited Qualifications
Through our partnership with Connections we have been able to offer a wide variety of employability programmes which will help young people gain additional skills, making them more attractive to potential employers. In the past we have also provided a range of accredited qualifications in a number of areas including:
- First aid
- Food hygiene
- Health and safety
Programmes of Informal Education
While education is certainly an important part in finding employment, Newcastle YMCA will help young people by providing ways for them to improve their skills. We also deliver a programme that helps young people to gain work experience which is a quality many employers find desirable in potential candidate.
Alternative Education for Excluded Pupils
The You Project is the name given to our Alternative Education Program. This project works with young people who have been excluded from school and are not able to access mainstream education. The You Project helps young people improve their lives by building confidence, establishing new friendships improving social skills and providing motivation to participate and learn. The Project offers sessions and accredited courses with Asdan, Wider Skills and NOCN.
In the last year the project has seen amazing progress in many of the young people. In just over a year they have gone from not engaging in any form of education or activities, to working with us a few days a week progressing to attend on a daily basis to a mature and impressive level of engagement in a multitude of ways.
- Asdan
- Wider Skills
- NOCN
